National Children’s Dental Health Month

NCDHM

Last week, we talked about Give Kids A Smile Day, which is actually the perfect segue into this week’s topic—National Children’s Dental Health Month.

This event, which was created by the American Dental Association, takes place throughout the month of February each year. Basically, it is the perfect time and opportunity to focus on encouraging the kids in your life to adapt healthy oral hygiene habits, such as brushing for two minutes two times a day, flossing regularly, scheduling/attending dental appointments every few months and (drumroll please), limiting their sugar intake.

Obviously, we don’t need to explain why brushing, flossing and regular dental checkups are so essential to dental health, so we are going to go ahead and highlight the theme of this year’s event: “Sugar Wars”.

To be honest, we are pumped about this theme, since it is an attempt to spread awareness about the fact that excessive consumption of sugary snacks and sweetened beverages is terrible for everyone’s teeth, as it often leads to cavities and other dental issues.

So, what can you do to involve yourself in this year’s National Children’s Dental Health Month?

Post about it. Share photos, infographics and sugar-slashing tricks on your social media channels. Be sure to include the hashtag #SugarWars!

Practice what you preach. We have said this before, but it is important to let kids see you doing the things that you tell them to do. So floss, brush and cut or eliminate sugar from your diet!

See whether there are any non-profits or charities in your area that focus on helping children and see whether they are looking for toothbrush/toothpaste/floss donations. Or you can reach out and see how else you can lend a hand.

Happy National Children’s Dental Health Month! Psst! It is also Gum Disease Awareness Month!
