Fillings are very, very important in the dental realm. And while they are astoundingly common, you might be surprised about just how complex the world of fillings can be!
Here is a fact that you may not already know, pulled from a fact sheet from The Department Of Consumer Affairs’ Dental Board Of California…All fillings are not created equal—and neither are the materials they are made out of.
Fillings can be crafted out of dental amalgam (“a self-hardening mixture of silver-tin-copper alloy powder and liquid mercury”) or a mixture of powdered glass and plastic resin, which is also known as a “composite filling”.
Both of these materials has their own list of pros and cons. The good news is that your dentist can and should be able to access which one of these options is the best fit for your smile, health and lifestyle. But you can still wow them with your new-found knowledge of fillings in the meantime.
