Are Cherries Good For Your Teeth?

It’s nearly cherry season. Tart, tangy and sweet, this ever-popular flavorful fruit has collected a crowd of fans.

But should you think twice about biting into cherries, out of concern for your smile and teeth?

Let’s begin by bringing up the benefits.

“Cherries are a good source of vitamin C, potassium, fiber, and other nutrients that your body needs to function optimally.” They are also high in “antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, which may reduce chronic disease risk and promote overall health.”

Great news, right? Plus, they are delicious and easy to incorporate into a variety of recipes. (Though they are just as tasty on their own.)

Two words of warning—avoid biting down on pits as this can lead to a dental emergency and follow up your noshing with a big glass of water.

And, just as importantly, don’t rush to the sink for a tooth brushing session right away afterward, as you may damage softened enamel. Wait at least half an hour.
